Mobile-botnet-based malware is surging and growing faster than ever, with more than 70,000 new malware variants reported in August, according to research firm Mandiant.
The top five companies that are leading the proliferation of mobile botnets are Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., Amazon.com Inc., Twitter Inc., Apple Inc. and Facebook Inc.
According to Mandiant’s monthly report, malware growth accelerated in the third quarter of 2016, driven by the introduction of new mobile bot tools and the growth in the number of botnets.
According to Mandiot, mobile bot-based threats are now responsible for at least $2.5 billion in losses in the U.S. alone.
Alibaba, which was the number one mobile bot distributor in the world in 2016, has been one of the top five bot distributors in the United States since 2015.
In June 2016, it began testing a new mobile tool called BOTEX for malware analysis.
In the second quarter of this year, Alibaba, Twitter, Apple and Facebook reported $6.3 billion in revenue, according, the report.
